Romanians had 1.3bn euros' worth of overdue loan payments in January

Banks' individual clients had overdue loan paymentstotally worth 5.7bn lei (1.3bn euros) in late January, with the sumbeing almost 73% higher than in the corresponding period of 2009,according to NBR data.

Sums representing more than30-day delays in loan repayment climbed by 6.8% in December andJanuary, after having posted the first decline of the past year inthe previous month. At 2.8bn lei, overdue payments forleu-denominated loans account for half of payment delays, whileoverdue payments for euro-denominated loans come to 35%.

Delays in paying instalmentsfor euro-denominated loans have doubled in the past year and havegone beyond the equivalent of 2bn lei (470m euros) in January,while delays for leu-denominated loans have risen by 40%. However,the fastest advance was registered by overdue payments for Swissfranc loans, whose volume tripled in January 2010-January 2011 andreached the equivalent of 822m lei.
