Small clothing manufacturers turn to local market

26.02.2008, 20:53 11

The increased competition from Asian manufacturers and the opportunities offered by the development of modern retail is encouraging small clothing manufacturers to turn to the local market, over 90% of which have been working under contract. "We are attempting to approach the local market, to get contracts with store chains and even with hypermarkets. So far, 98% of our production has been exported, but this year, we want 50% of the production to be allocated for the local market," said Anastasia Bujor, commercial manager of Manufactura, in Targu Magurele. The plant in Teleorman county has around 500 employees, and produces on average 35,000 items per month, with 5% of production subcontracted by Dolce & Gabbana. "So far, we have mostly worked for them, but due to salary increases, which are reflected in the labour costs, our client has looked more towards China and India," added Bujor.
