TNT Romania, a major player on the domestic delivery services market, forecasts revenues from international deliveries to rise by over 20% in 2009, after these services brought in around 80% of the company's domestic revenues.

"For next year, we've budgeted growth to stand above the market level, namely over 20% on the international delivery segment and over 30% on the domestic one," said Bogdan Zafiu, sales & marketing manager of TNT Romania. This year, the company expects to reach turnover worth above 40m euros, given the 25% growth reported so far.
Zafiu specified this year's increase is based on the arrival of firms from the automotive industry and other high-tech fields on the domestic market. "These companies were already TNT's traditional clients outside Romania," he added.
Domestic courier services have boomed this year and managed to double their weight in revenues compared with last year, to 20%. "We had an 80% increase on the domestic segment and the number of customers rose by 70%," said Zafiu. Given the significant growth posted on this segment, the company developed two new sorting centres on the domestic segment, in Sibiu and Brasov.
TNT's strategy further entails development on the international delivery segment. "International air transport generates 47% of TNT Romania's turnover, international road transport has a 30% weight and 20% are held by internal road transport," said Zafiu. Though the company's representatives had expected customers to shift from air to road transport, given the rising oil prices, weights have remained relatively constant. "Both services have registered increases since the start of the year and I believe the trend will maintain," said Zafiu, who specified the Romanian market has not been hurt by the international crisis, yet.
The Romanian courier market has witnessed an impressive growth rate in recent years, with companies even doubling their turnovers year-on-year. The rate stirred investors' interest, with 2008 being the year of deals. "The Romanian courier market will maintain its growth rate above the EU average for five years from now," explained Zafiu.
