New arrivals on the market, aggressive strategies, new storeconcepts and acquisitions, these have been the main events thatmarked Romanian retail this year, a field MEMRB values at 20bneuros. While the consumption basket is 2bn euros poorer than lastyear, according to the above-quoted source, retailers have tried tostrengthen their positions and gain market share, inclusively byacquiring rivals.


1.On the segment of modern retail, the number of stores rose in2008-2010. Thus, for the first time the segment includes over 1,000stores, from 731 in 2008.
2.The deal of the year in retail: Lidl takes over PlusRomania.
3.Flanco and Leonardo, the only reorganisation processes approvedby lenders.
4.Discussions around Tesco arrival.
5.Store closures and sales. Almost 7,200 stores, pharmacies andrestaurants vanished from the map of retail in less than two years,with this as one of the most visible financial crisis effects,besides the falling consumption.
