There was a big commotion yesterday, when the Ministryof Administration and Internal Affairs presented a review of itsactivity. President Traian Băsescu was fuming with rage: theInterior Ministry is a corrupt structure, wherever you put yourfinger, corruption seeps through. The President is now discoveringthe embarrassing state of the most bureaucratic Governmentinstitution - the Interior Ministry. But the problem is old, withPDL (Băsescu's party) ministers heading this ministry over thecourse of time, most prominently by Vasile Blaga (the party's greyeminence). With 150,000 people, around 60,000 of whom work in thepolice, the Ministry of Administration and Interior has been at thecentre of scandals for many years, whether they entailed issuingdriver's licences, illegal employment or fight over control of thesecret service of the Interior Ministry, the eyes and ears of everyinterior minister. The scandal involving corrupt customs officersis but the last episode in a long series of illegalities foundwithin the ministry.
