Treichl: We'll catch up with BRD by yearend

18.04.2008, 20:34 9

The fact that Soci?t? G?n?rale's BRD has outranked the BCR in terms of network size and of efficiency is the result of the French group's entry onto the market in 1999, according to Andreas Treichl, CEO of Erste Bank (the BCR's majority shareholder). "They (Soci?t? G?n?rale) started in 1999, while we started in 2006, however, by the end of this year, we will catch up with them," said Treichl. He also says he would like the BCR to defend its position as leader of the corporate segment in the medium and long run. BCR reached 573 branches, compared with the over 800 for BRD, of which almost 100 are mobile offices designed for rural areas. It is difficult to compare the financial performances of the two banks due to different accounting systems, and because a comparison would depend on whether some bank subsidiaries are included in the calculation or not. According to Romanian standards, BRD has taken a significant leap forward in terms of net profit, after the bank reported an around 274.7 million euro income, compared with 247.4 million euros for the BCR. In terms of assets, however, the BCR has remained the leader, with 16.5 billion euros, compared with 10.8 billion euros at BRD.
