Vinterra exports down 10%

11.10.2005, 19:33 12

Wine producer Vinterra International has reported a 10% drop in exports in the first eight months of the year, despite the company''s turnover rising by 5% against the same period of 2004 and amid higher consumption on the domestic market.

Over the last four years Vinterra''s export volumes have increased constantly.

This year, however, it saw its first decrease. This could continue in 2006, given the low level of production.

"Because of the high pressure on the international market, especially in terms of price cuts by European producers, the volume of exports reached 30% of total sales, down from 40% last year," said Nicolae David, the general manager of Vinterra International.

He added that exports could continue to shrink over the following period, especially due to the lower production this year.

According to the company''s latest estimates, more than 60% of this year''s grape production was hit by the rain at the end of September.

"We were aware of a significant part of these losses as early as the beginning of spring, when the vineyard was affected by frost. We then estimated 40% lower production for this year, but following the first rains we also added this difference of at least 20%," David said.

To strengthen its presence on the domestic market, the company will launch a new product this month - the "bag in box" wine, aimed at both individual consumption and, in particular, the HoReCa segment. dana.ciriperu@zf.ro
