25.07.2010, 23:08 6

While Hungary is standing tall to IMF and EU criticism regardingthe introduction of a special tax for banks, Alessandro Profumo,UniCredit Group CEO, maintains that such an idea discussed atEuropean level is a "mistake". He also rejects the thesis accordingto which banks should somehow help strengthen the budgets ofEuropean states after several lending institutions were bailed outwith taxpayers' money. UniCredit head believes a new wave ofprivatisations in Romania would revive foreign investors' interestin the Romanian market, helping the economy recover. "Yes, Romaniais a large market and I strongly believe resuming privatisationswould stir interest. However, a set of stable and consistent rulesneed to be created for buyers, so that investors should clearlyknow what they are allowed to do and have the certainty the statewill not change its mind after a while". Profumo's perception isthat Romanian authorities have a clear image about the problems ofthe economy, but "this does not always translate into solutions"."I am confident, though, the step from diagnosis to treatment willbe taken more quickly".
