Over 10,000 tourists are currently holidaying at the seaside resort of Mamaia, a number exceeding hotel operators' initial estimates, stated Dragos Raducan, secretary general of the Federation of Romanian Hospitality Operators. "Over 10,000 tourists came to Mamaia for the 1st of May mini-holiday, thus forcing five two-star hotels to open at the last moment. The three-star hotels were already open and full," said Raducan. However, the southern part of the Romanian coast was in less demand this year. Resorts such as Costinesti or Neptun, which used to be very busy in the previous years lost out to the resort of Mamaia this year. "The 1st of May is a very good barometer for forecasting tourist levels for the coming summer season, therefore we can conclude it will be a good year for the Romanian seaside," Raducan added. According to the secretary general, another 3,500 tourists will come to the Romanian seaside through the "One week at the seaside" programme as of May 15, with stays made available through this programme already booked for early June. Apart from holidaymakers travelling to Romanian resorts, on Friday 17,700 tourists crossed the Romanian-Bulgarian border in Constanta county, with 16,500 Romanians exiting the country through the customs checkpoints in Vama Veche, Negru Voda and Ostrov, in order to spend their 1st of May holiday abroad. The checkpoint witnessing the most traffic was in Vama Veche, which registered over 12,000 people crossing the border. The traffic seen in Ostrov exceeded levels recorded in Negru Voda, with the former seeing 2,500 holidaymakers and the latter 2,000.
