Six Romanian construction companies and eleven foreign ones wereyesterday declared winners of the nine sections of motorway on theNădlac-Sibiu motorway, that the National Company of Motorways andNational Roads in Romania (CNADNR) put up for tender at the end oflast year. The winning contractors submitted bids with a cumulatedvalue of around 1 billion euros, although CNADNR had estimated thatthe nine sections of motorway would cost more, i.e. 1.4 billioneuros. In other words, the 183 kilometres of motorway will cost 5.4million euros each on average.

The winners include some of the biggest local constructioncompanies, which managed to post cumulated turnovers of hundreds ofmillions of euros even in times of crisis: Romstrade, controlled bybusinessman Nelu Iordache, Spedition UMB and Tehnostrade (bothcompanies held by Dorinel Umbrărescu), Straco Grup (Alexandru andTraian Horpos) and Euroconstruct Trading'98 (Dan Besciu and SorinVulpescu).

The construction market recorded a 40% cumulated decline in 2009and 2010 and the investments of the Transport Ministry ininfrastructure have been seen by many representatives ofconstruction companies as the breath of fresh air they needed torevive their businesses.
