Appetite for exercise set to double by 2010

The market of sportswear, nutritional supplements and the number of sport clubs will double by 2010, as Romanians will be willing to spend increasingly more money for a healthy life.
"We estimate the market of sports goods is currently worth approximately 30-35 million euros and in principle we believe the market will follow the same trend, of growth by over 25% per year," stated Mirela Rosca, CEO with SSD Sport System Development, the importer of Lotto brand in Romania.
She specifies there has been a constant growth trend for several years, beyond players' initial estimates.
On the other hand, Dan Tudose, sales manager with Kraus, Reebok importer in Romania, projects the sports equipment market will witness constant growth by 10-15% per year, in the context where Romanian consumers will continue to exercise, but also pay more attention to how they look when they do it. "Consumers are looking for high-quality stuff (...)," he specified.
Any additional effort also bolsters sales of nutritional supplements, whose market could to advance by 20-25% per year.
"Considering the upward trend the Romanian market of nutritional supplements has witnessed over recent years, we estimate the market will revolve around the value of 80-90 million euros in 2010. The market will practically double compared to the current level of 41 million euros," said Horia Vilcu, general manager with Walmark Romania, one of the most important players on this market.
He believes market growth will be driven by the tighter competition and by the higher volume of information consumers will benefit from over the next 5 years. Additional factors, says Walmark representative, are the global trend, which is also ascending, and the rising budgets companies in this domain are earmarking to promote products.
The market is currently divided between more than 100 players, a number that is expected to nearly double by 2010.
Statistical data show Romanians are spending increasingly more time at the office, but they will not neglect exercise in 2010, though. "Romanians will exercise more. There are sports fields and halls opened 24 hours a day that operate at capacity. People practice sports even at 2 or 3 in the morning," said Dan Tudose.
Customers of sports clubs are mainly people with incomes above the average, says Vali Enache, executive manager with Daimon Sport Club.
Over the next two years, the number of sport clubs will see considerable growth, in the context where Romanians are growing increasingly aware of the benefits of sport, as well as due to the fact that most companies have started endorsing such programmes for their employees.
