The international drug market could start the era of cheapproducts after patents of products with tens of billions of dollarsin sales expire, which will allow other producers to launch anaggressive campaign of lower prices, and thus allow for a declinein healthcare spending.
Among the products that will lose their patent over the next fewyears are Lipitor, produced by Pfizer, the world's best-sellingdrug, as well as Plavix, produced by Sanofi-Aventis incollaboration with Bristol-Myers Squibb, the world's number twobest-seller.
In Romania local drug producers, which only include generic drugsin their portfolios, i.e. products that start being manufacturedwhen the patent of an original drug expires, have launches of tensof drugs scheduled, which means the international generics feverwill also partly reflect in the Romanian market. The NationalHealth Insurance House encourages consumption of generics and hasimplemented several measures to this effect, after itsrepresentatives said on several occasions that expensive drugs sawan unjustified rise over the past few years.
