Auto market players: We should be happy if 100,000 cars are sold this year

27.04.2010, 20:19 6

Car sales will continue to decline in 2010 given the economiccrisis, of non-deductibility of VAT and of the lack of financing onthe market, believe officials of the Automotive Manufacturers andImporters Association (APIA), at the end of a first quarter thatdid not see a return to a positive trend even after the start ofthe car scrappage scheme.

"The forecast made at the beginning of the year - 115,000 carssold in 2010, is no longer valid. Considering that sales continuedto decline in the first quarter of the year, we expect this year'ssales to amount to around 100,000 cars," said Brent Valmar, APIAvice-president, at the conference "Mediafax Talks about the AutoIndustry".

Ford Romania, on the other hand, which will take over thebrand's import operations from Romcar, part of Tiriac Holdings, onthe 1st of August expects the local market to reach 500,000 unitsper year, but in 2018.

"This is Romania's maximum estimated potential, half a millioncars sold per year. We expect this level to be reached in 2018, butit could also occur in 2016 or 2020," said Paul Flanagan, managingdirector of Ford Romania's national sales company.
