Only 5,500 people are working on the ten biggest infrastructure projects that Ziarul Financiar got from the Transports Ministry, which is about 1% of the total construction workers. How can economy be relaunched this way?
Bombarded by statements from the authorities that the infrastructure is the number one goal of the current government, Ziarul Financiar requested a list of the top ten biggest construction sites operational at the moment by number of workers, number of kilometres of road built/rehabilitated, by value of the contract and the stage of works.
Judging from the answer received, the value of the ten biggest infrastructure-building sites currently opened amounts to about 1.1 billion euros. In comparison, the value of the investment of the top ten private construction sites is 2 billion euros, double the state's.
"Infrastructure projects are nothing compared to those in the private sector. One billion euros is not enough for the top ten construction sites. Furthermore, one needs to see how work is going on those sites and if there are overdue payments. There should be a major ongoing infrastructure project in every county, because the number of unemployed people in the construction sector has increased very much," stated R`zvan Niculescu-Aron, vice-president of the Association of Construction Companies Owners (PSC).
President Traian B`sescu has recently said that he would soon visit the main construction sites as the government's budget set aside about 9 billion euros for investments in infrastructure. Yet the President should visit the private construction sites, which continue to generate most jobs. Be they shopping centres, office space or residential space developments, the private projects created more jobs, as they are employing over 7,000 people even though the projects are smaller in scope.
