Investments in wind farms are most often compared with the boomrecorded on the real estate market. So whereas in the 2007-2008period one would talk hectares, now the new trendy word ismegawatt. This year, investments in the wind power sector willreach around one billion euros, but the question is how much of aburden these "windmills" will become both for the population andfor the industry.
"Whilst up until just over a year ago we used to talk hectares, nowwe talk MW. Bubbles tend to form in the most developed sectors,"said Mihai David, general manager of Hidroelectrica, Romania'scheapest energy producer at a seminar on renewable energiesorganised by Business Magazin weekly.
Apart from Hidroelectrica, the event's partners were KDF Energy,CEZ and Noerr law firm.
The head of Hidroelectrica did not, however, say if this "bubble ofgreen energy" would burst as the real estate one did, but itseffects, apart from the positive impact on the environment, willinclude higher energy bills both for household consumers and forthe industry.
"The fact that energy will become more expensive will lead toproducts manufactured in Romania becoming more expensive.Investments in renewable energy will drive high-cost energyproducers out of business faster," David adds.
