Boromir logs 25 million-euro growth

10.01.2005, 00:00 11

Boromir Ind Ramnicu Valcea, the milling and bakery industry operator, reported a 25 million-euro growth in sales last year, to 75 million euros.

"The growth followed the expansion of certain production capacities, the broadened range of products, and the acquisition of pasta producer ProPasta Iasi," says Constantin Boromiz, chairman and one of the five shareholders of Boromir Ind.

The company acquired 95% in stock of ProPasta Iasi, which could no longer cope with the negative impact of last year's wheat crisis.

"We have raised our production capacity in Iasi and are planning to sell 5,000 tonnes of pasta this year, almost double the sales we posted before taking over this producer," says Boromiz.

Boromir Ind last year invested about 6 million euros in the modernisation of its Sibiu-based mill, which now has a capacity of 180 tonnes/day, in a scone plant and in a hard wheat line. The company last year also entered the flour market with a flour packaging line.

"This year, we will invest about 4 million euros to strengthen our market position and to purchase equipment for frozen dough," says Boromiz.

The company projects turnover worth 80 million euros for this year. "This considerable increase is followed by a year of consolidation," states Boromiz.

Boromir last year was in talks to take over Plevna SA, in a bid to secure its entry on the Bucharest bakery market.

"We 'forgot' about this business. We simply lost interest. Moreover, in the long term, the Bucharest market is not very attractive because workforce costs will rise and there are already restrictions regarding the circulation of heavy trucks in Bucharest. However, should new opportunities emerge, and should they prove viable, we will not stand aside," Boromiz maintains.

Plevna holds a production facility and some 8 hectares of land in the commercial area around Grozavesti student complex, where Carrefour, Bricostore and Media Galaxy stores have been opened lately. For this deal, Boromir competed against another two large producers: Vel Pitar, owned by Broadhurst investment fund and Racova Com Agro Pan, belonging to businessman Adrian Porumboiu.

Boromir group owns bakeries in Buzau, Valcea, Sibiu, Deva and Medias. The group also holds the Cibin mill in Sibiu, two Comcereal units, Amylon Sibiu and Extrasib Sibiu, as well as 27 stores in the cities where it owns the bakeries.
