Carpatica, a small bank controlled by Sibiu businessman IlieCarabulea, is getting ready to return to profit after havingundergone a tough restructuring last year, says Nicolae Surdu, general manager of the bank.

The banker targets a 10% increase in loans granted to clients, which should rebuild its revenue base, and the considerable declinein provision expenses should make room for a small profit.

"The bank underwent a reorganisation process last year that wasbased on two pillars: business line rethinking and territorialnetwork restructuring. We managed to complete it in seven months, between January and August, extremely fast," Surdu, 50, told ZF inan interview.

He was brought to the helm of Carpatica in the autumn of 2009,when the old management team was entirely changed amid financialproblems. Surdu came with the task of reviewing the bank'sorganisational structure, as well as of reorganisingoperations.

"The bank has now been restructured, reorganised, laid ondifferent bases. It's an entirely different bank from October 2009,when I came on board," Surdu said.
