Domestic market not ready to go organic

21.12.2005, 19:20 10

Seventy percent of the organic food produced in Romania is exported, given that Romanians do not use such products because of the little information they have on them and due to the much higher prices, a study by Expert Group reveals. "The large proportion of exports is explained by the fact that Romanians are not informed of the existence of such products first of all. Secondly, organic products are more expensive than traditional ones and Romanians still have a low purchasing power," stated Lucian Pavel, a consultant with Expert Group, the company that implemented the project. "There is the production of organic foods in Romania but unfortunately they do not sell," Bogdan Paranici, the manager of Landviser Consult & Trade in his turn stated. The main export markets are the EU countries, especially Holland and Germany, which get grain, vegetables, aromatic plants, honey and organic fruit. ZF
