Edy group set to tackle regional market

31.08.2007, 19:13 10

Hunedoara-based Edy group, which is expected to generate a turnover worth 100 million euros this year from shipping, distribution and logistics activities for clients such as Coca-Cola, IKEA, Unilever, InBev and Romstal, plans to become a regional player and enter new transportation sectors.
Over the past five years, Edy group has witnessed one of the fastest growth rates in terms of turnover, from 9 million euros in 2002, to 100 million euros this year.
"Our latest project envisages regional expansion and development for other types of transportation, such as rail and river. Our main investment targets include a sustained increase in our fleet of trucks, the development of our network of logistic centres, the creation of a transport hub and the development of support activities," said Mircea Darabant, Edy manager.
The decision to become a regional player will most probably entail an acquisition, but the company's representatives were unable to provide any details. Grup Feroviar Roman, an important player in freight rail transportation, has also recently operated acquisitions on the Serbian market, and also put in a bid for Hungarian- based MAV Cargo transportation company.
In the first six months of the year, Edy group registered a turnover worth 46.5 million euros, and estimates it will end this year with a turnover worth around 100 million euros. The group's most important company is the transportation firm Alin Trans Impex, which last year generated around 75% of the group's overall turnover.
"The H1 turnover accounts for 80% of the total turnover generated last year. The main growth drivers were the development of customers' regional businesses and the fact that we provided complete transportation solutions," stated Darabant.
In total, Edy's logistic centres cover 20,000 square metres; 10,000 square metres in Timisoara and 10,000 square metres in Deva. In addition, the company plans to secure another 10,000 square metres in Deva.
"We've also started building on 10,000 square metres in two more cities in the country and carry out operations in rented centres.
"Our plan is to reach 200,000 square metres within two years," added Darabant.
Edy group has budgeted investments worth 50 million euros for this year, for both the development of logistic centres and fleet expansion. By the end of this year, Edy expects to have 1,200 trucks, from a fleet of 850 trucks last year.
The company started to expand its fleet as early as this spring, when it acquired 350 Volvo trucks.
Edy group was formed in 1991 by Hunedoara businessman Popa Alin Alexandru and currently includes eight companies.
