Anna Maria Vikarius, manager of Heineken Romania'sMiercurea-Ciuc-based brewery, says one of the reasons for droppingthe malt production division within the plant was the fact that itaccounted for less than half of the facility's requiredproduction.

"We will keep the malt storage area and will most probably usethe remaining space for other purposes," said Anna Maria Vikarius, who has been managing the biggest beer plant within HeinekenRomania for almost six years. Vikarius has not mentioned what thearea will be used for. Vikarius, 50, is the only woman at the helmof a Heineken brewery in Central and Eastern Europe. She started towork within the Miercurea-Ciuc plant 26 years ago, immediatelyafter graduating from the faculty of Organic Chemical Technologywithin Babes Bolyai University in Cluj. Her first job in the plantwas as an engineering intern within the physical and chemical testslab.

In mid September Heineken Romania announced it would close maltdivisions in Hateg, Craiova and Miercurea-Ciuc starting inmid-October, and make 61 employees redundant. Company officialsthen gave as reasons for this the fact that malt divisions entailedvery high costs, due to the significant consumption of energy andwater, with the costs now being completely eliminated since malt isacquired from suppliers in Romania and the EU.

"Following the closure of the malt division, 18 people have beenmade redundant, with their contracts lasting until the end ofOctober. They will receive severance pay and assistance in findinga new job," said the manager of the factory that currently employs317 staff.

Heineken Romania, a beer producer that posted 225 million eurosin turnover last year and a 40 million-euro profit, has fivefactories, in Miercurea Ciuc, Craiova, Hateg, Constanta and BereMures, with the latter acquired a year ago.

Almost all brands in Heineken Romania's portfolio are producedin Miercurea-Ciuc, with the exception of Hategana and Gambrinus."The Ciuc, Harghita, Heineken and Schlossgold brands are producedexclusively in Miercurea-Ciuc, because the water in this region issofter than in other parts of Romania. But we also produce theGolden Brau, Bucegi, Silva and Gosser brands," added Vikarius.
