Over 2,600 Romanians received medical treatment outside Romanialast year. These are the first data to emerge, showing how manyRomanians benefited from medical care abroad covered by thestate.

The Romanian state last year spent 37.2 million RON (8.7 millioneuros) via the Health Ministry and the National Health InsuranceHouse (CNAS) by reimbursing medical services provided to Romanianpatients abroad, according to data centralised by ZF.

The two institutions are involved differently in reimbursements. The CNAS makes reimbursements for services provided abroad forpeople who travel or who moved to other countries, but are insuredin Romania, while the Ministry covers procedures performed when thetreatment is not available in Romanian hospitals. There is anothercategory of reimbursements that CNAS can make - if someone wants tobe treated abroad, the costs can be borne by CNAS, but to theextent covered by fees charged in Romania.
