Mandatory home insurance, a project under discussion for severalyears, for which several enforcement deadlines terms have beenannounced, is likely to be introduced this year, but neither theauthorities, nor the company selling these policies can specify aprecise date. The introduction of mandatory insurance, forcing homeowners to pay 10 or 20 euros per annum for insurance, is againbeing delayed because the Disaster Insurance Pool (PAID), thecompany set to sell these policies, must set up a data base thatwould include information about all housing units of Romania, butalso buy reinsurance from the international market with money mostlikely coming from the Finance Ministry. Marius Bulugea, PAIDgeneral manager, estimates that in 2010, after the introduction ofmandatory insurance, around 20-25% of residential owners will buythis policy, meaning that insurers' revenues are likely to revolvearound 30m euros.
