Portuguese Mota Engil group, which operates in Romania through Martifer, its energy division and is developing the Romfelt Plaza residential complex as part of a consortium, will participate in the tender for the Ploiesti-Brasov highway, a project appraised at about 1.5 billion euros.
The group that comprises about 90 companies has recently announced it is interested in four tenders to lease and develop four highways in Eastern Europe, with the value of the projects put at approximately 6.3 billion euros, according to Portuguese daily Diario Economico.
Mota Engil will lead the consortium that will submit a bid to lease and develop the 108-kilometre highway to link Ploiesti and Brasov, along with Brisa, Portugal's biggest highway operator. The joint venture formed by the two will hold 30% of the consortium, with the other companies participating in it including Soares da Costa, MSF, Monte Adriano, Amandio de Carvalho, Rosas Construtores and Gabriel Couto.
The statement came from Arnaldo Figueiredo, the chairman of the group's constructions and infrastructure unit, Engenharia&Construcao, who said that the company was involved directly in three tenders to build highways in Romania, Slovakia and Hungary, worth about 4.3 billion euros.
The fourth project, which entails a 30-year lease of a highway in Poland, is worth approximately 2 billion euros and the Portuguese group is on the shortlist of the Polish Transports Ministry.
Mota Engil, which posted more than 1.3 billion euro turnover in 2006, has been present in Romania since 2005, when it invested 55 million euros in a biodiesel refinery in Lehliu through its energy division Martifer.
The Portuguese have recently announced they want to also develop operations on services and environmental markets, through their MEAS division, which estimates it will increase its revenues four times by 2010, up to 500 million euros.
Mota Engil is present on the domestic real estate market through the Romfelt Plaza residential development, where it serves as one of the general contractors. The over 70 million-euro project is located close to the Fundeni Lake and will comprise 616 flats.
