Brothers Adrian and Dragos Paval in Bacau want to bring theDedeman chain to a 1,230 million-RON (290 million-euro) turnoverthis year, from 1,067 million RON (252 million euros) in 2009,which would make it the first Romanian-held company to reach no. 1on the DIY market.
The leader of the construction materials distribution market, putat over 2 billion euros, is another Romanian company, Arabesque, controlled by Cezar Rapotan. Rapotan also tapped into the DIYretail market with the Mr. Bricolage franchise, but the stores haveyet to make their mark on a market where foreign investors accountfor over 70%.
However, Romanian investors could have their revenge this year ifDedeman leaves Praktiker behind, after last year the Germansremained in the lead with a 257 million-euro turnover, but have notannounced any expansion plans for 2010.
Moreover, France's Bricostore was no longer in the race for the no.1 position in 2009, after its turnover fell 27% against 2008, to178 million euros.
The company held by the Paval brothers will open a store in Arad atthe end of this week, the third one completed in 2010. The chainhas budgeted 180 million RON (42 million euros) in investments infour new projects for this year.
