Gecad ePayment, an integrator of e-commerce solutions, has introduced PayPal as a means of payment for merchants that use the ePayment system, and expects to see a doubling of its sales made by online stores to customers abroad.
"The total value of online purchases from abroad in local online stores, which are a part of the ePayment system, is forecast to reach 25 million euros in the first half of next year, compared to 12.6 million euros in the last six months of this year," Carmen Sebe, chief executive of Gecad ePayment told ZF.
This year, PayPal, the largest online payment processor worldwide (held by the auction site eBay) has expanded its operations onto 87 markets, Romania included.
"PayPal is one of the most frequently used methods of payment in many countries. Integrating this technology into their systems will boost the competitiveness of online stores working with ePayment, and their clients will have another convenient method of acquiring products and services over the Internet, whether they are inside the country or not," said Sebe, who specified that almost 30% of the total number of online transactions are conducted from abroad.
The company representative also added that the introduction of the new method of payment will not have a significant impact on the Romanian market, as there are not that many holders of PayPal accounts.
Gecad ePayment estimates the value of e-commerce with payments made online using bank cards will double next year, to 70 million euros.
The total number of transactions conducted via the Internet is expected to rise from 463,000 to 780,000 next year, with a significant role played by large companies, which have already taken the first steps towards entering this channel, the chief executive believes. "We are expecting important companies to enter the market, particularly utility companies and telecom operators," added Sebe.
