Philip Morris exports 95m euros' worth of cigarettes, JTI 35% of its output

Cigarette exports accounted for 1% of the overall volume ofRomanian exports last year, i.e. around 360 million euros,according to data supplied to ZF by the National Association ofExporters and Importers in Romania.

Cigarette manufacturers Philip Morris and Japan TobaccoInternational (JTI) thus rank among Romania's biggest exporters inthe fast moving consumer goods sector.

JTI, which posted over 820 million euros in turnover in 2009through its two companies - JTI Manufacturing (the Pipera factory)and J.T. International (the sales and distribution company) - lastyear exported around 35% of the factory's production, compared with20% in 2009.

"In 1993 we started our business in Romania by importing Camelfrom Germany. Since in 2009, the JTI factory on the Pipera platformhas been exporting Camel to Germany. In fact, all filter-less Camelcigarettes sold in EU member states are produced in Bucharest. Wealso export many other brands, from South America to Asia andAustralia," said Gilda Lazăr, corporate affairs manager of JTIRomania, a company that currently employs around 850.

The cigarette market, estimated at over two billion euros,consists of three international companies - British AmericanTobacco, Philip Morris and JTI - which control the biggest segmentof the FMCG market.
