Food supplement sales could rise by an annual 10-16% between2010 and 2012 compared with the over 100 million euros recorded in2009, according to estimates of research company PMR. Romanianproducers, however, are less optimistic and believe the market willfall in terms of volume.

The 100 million euros include both sales through drugstores andspecialised stores, and sales over the Internet and insupermarkets. "In 2009 the growth of the food supplements marketslowed down significantly, with a mere 2-3% rise on the previousyear because of economic difficulties," reads the "Market of foodsupplements in 2010 in Romania" survey conducted by PMR.

Sales through drugstores and specialised stores exceed 90million euros, with around 10 million euros being accounted for byInternet and supermarket sales.

Food supplements are non-prescription drugs, the so-called OTCs(over the counter drugs), which in the first part of this year sawthe value of sales rise but the volume fall amid price increases. The price of OTCs is not regulated by the authorities, so it canfluctuate freely. These drugs are dependent on the population'spurchasing power, because they are fully paid for by the patients.
