Betting agencies and brewers are expecting two-digit turnovergrowth rates during the June 11-July 11 period of the WorldFootball Championship of South Africa, despite Romania's having notqualified.
"Had Romania participated in the Championship, this would havegenerated higher turnover for sporting bets agencies. However, weexpect revenues to be at least 30-40% higher during this period,"says John Heaton, consultant of Super Bet company.
Managers of companies in the field of electrical home appliancessay the participation of the national football team would have hada positive impact over the TV set market, in the context where inRomania sales of electronics and electrical home appliancesregistered the biggest slump in the EU in the first quarter, byalmost 25%. "2008 was a year when sales were spurred both by eventssuch as the European Football Championship, and boomingconsumption. The increase registered then from the previous year onthe LCD TV segment got as high as 250%, but the weight of sportsevents stood at 50%," says Adrian Olteanu, CEO with Flanco.
