The general manager of the operations carried out by the Siemens German group in Romania reported that the domestic unit derived turnover worth 350 million euros in 2005.

This year, the domestic branch of Siemens has reached 2,500 employees and is present in 13 locations, up from 600 employees and 6 locations two years ago.

The fiscal year 2005, ended on September 30th, brought Siemens turnover worth more than 350 million euros in Romania. This is a result of the strategy embraced by the company, which has included several acquisitions and the development of greenfield projects. The economic background has also been favourable.

"Romania is now experiencing a boom of interest, often being called Europe''s China. It hosts our second most important development centre, after Russia, due to the market opportunities. The skilled labour force, the rapid transfer of competence, as well as the low cost of activities have made 2005 a favourable year for us," stated Adrian Baicusi, general manager of Siemens SRL, who became head of the company in September 2003.

"Two years ago, we were 600 people, now there are more than 2,500 employees. Two years ago, we were in 6 locations. Today, Siemens is present in Romania in 13 locations," added Baicusi. "The turnover target set for 2014, one billion euros, is also on schedule," added the general manager.

Infrastructure projects in the energy and industrial domains, which the company has carried out, have had the biggest contribution to these results. Siemens is among the most important suppliers of equipment and turnkey projects for the national grid company, Transelectrica. The largest contract with Transelectrica was sealed in 2004, covering a three-year term, and concerns the retooling of Romania''s biggest transmission substation, Bucuresti Sud.

Another profitable deal for Siemens was the winning of the international tender for the construction of a water treatment station in Constanta harbour, with the value of the contract standing at 6.48 million euros. The contract was signed in July 2005 and is due to be finalised next October. In 2006, the Germans will realise another two projects of this type in Iasi. roxana.petrescu@zf.ro
