Rompetrol Rafinare completes retooling

Petromidia targets a refining capacity of 5 million tonnes per year by 2009

Rompetrol Rafinare, part of Rompetrol petroleum group, one of the major players on domestic petroleum market, announced it completed the retooling of Petromidia, one of the major refineries on the domestic market.
"Five years ago, we started modernising the installations. Today, we can say the refinery was completely modernised and we can focus on increasing the refining capacity," Cosmin Cocean, chief executive officer at Rometrolm Rafinare said on Tuesday.
Petromidia refinery was taken over in 2001 by Rompetrol group and this year it projects a refining capacity of 3.8 million tonnes of crude oil. Petromidia targets a capacity of 5 million tonnes per year by 2009, with the necessary investment programme being estimated at 200 million euros. "We could reach a refining capacity of 5 million tonnes as soon as next year, but the quality of the products would be affected," says Cosmin Cocean.
Rompetrol Rafinare representatives on Tuesday announced the start of the operation of a greenfield investment amounting to some 7 million dollars (5.6 million euros), into an automatic diesel oil in-line blending installation, which ensures a high quality for products and reduces production costs. The installation will reduce the blending time for substances that make up a specific fuel and comes with a 24-month warranty since it reaches the maximum level of performance, add the company's representatives.
The installation was implemented by Rominserv, while technical support and equipment were provided by FMC Blending&Transfer, member of the American company FMC Technologies Inc.
"This is the second major project, after we started operating the similar installation for gas in 2003. The new equipment for diesel oils offer an additional benefit: Rompetrol Rafinare can add biodiesel, as well, in a controlled percentage - this is highly important both for excise calculation and for the quality of the final product," states the executive officer with Rompetrol Rafinare.
Rompetrol group intends to negotiate with the Ministry of Economy and Research to obtain certain fiscal incentives, so as to start producing biofuels.
"By excises exemption, we are practically brought to the same level with the importers. Considering there are some 3 million ha of plot unused, we think the state could offer more than an excise exemption," mentioned Cocean.
