Romtelecom, no. 1 on the Romanian fixed telephony market, willrestructure its Operations department, the company's largest,making more than 20% of its overall number of employees redundant,i.e. around 600 people, according to an announcement of theoperator.
The redundancies come in the context of the reorganisation, as wellas in the wake of investments in new technologies, which make somepositions within the operator unnecessary. After introducingsoftware that automates certain operations, Romtelecom no longerneeds certain specialised technicians, according to informationsupplied by the operator. One of the biggest changes will affectfield work. Whilst at present the around 1,200 Romtelecom teamsconsisted of two people, after the restructuring there will be onesingle technician, who will also drive the car. All employeesleaving the company will receive severance pay, according toRomtelecom.
