Romanian employees' net salaries went up over 20% in the tobaccoindustry and in IT in February against the similar period of lastyear, with two-digit increases (between 14 and 17%) also recordedfor editing activities and for drink manufacturers, show datapublished yesterday by the National Statistics Institute (INS).

According to statistics, the best-paid employees in the economy- those in the tobacco industry and bankers - boasted the highestsalary increases in the past year, but representatives of companiesin those sectors do not confirm these increases. A possibleexplanation is that the INS calculates the average salary byconsidering overall salaries against the number of employees. Apossible salary increase can be explained in the case of companiesthat operated redundancies in the past year by them keeping thesame value of overall salaries.

"We don't know what the sources of the INS are, but what we cansay is that the data do not reflect the situation at JTI. Thesalary increases in the company were along the level of those madeby multinationals in the FMCG sector," said Gilda Lazăr, corporateaffairs manager of cigarette manufacturer Japan TobaccoInternational Romania, which currently employs around 850.
