31.05.2007, 19:09 11

The NBR (National Bank of Romania) has so far registered 118 non-bank financial institutions in the General Register, from a total of 266 companies that submitted the necessary papers. The first deputy governor of the NBR, Florin Georgescu, stated at the beginning of the week that the registration of the non-bank financial institutions would be completed "within a reasonable time frame," without specifying when exactly it would happen. 108 NBFIs were registered at the central bank in the beginning of May- ten less than the NBR announced this week. On May 3rd, only 230 companies had notified the NBR of their intentions concerning registration. Among the non-financial banking institutions that have so far submitted registration requests, 227 existed before the NBR rules and 39 were formed afterwards. Out of the credit companies that were operational before the legal framework was in place, 82 have already been registered, whilst 13 withdrew their requests before receiving an answer from the NBR, with a further 15 being rejected.
