Tourism Ministry announces it will build 50m-euro multipurpose hall

Compania Naţională de Investiţii (The National InvestmentCompany), an institution subordinated to the Ministry of RegionalDevelopment and Tourism (MDRT) yesterday launched a priorinformation notice for the building of a multipurpose hall that canseat 20,000, worth 50 million euros. The representatives of MDRTtold Mediafax that the project could be developed in Bucharest's2nd sector.

The project is set to take two years and a half to develop, withcontract awarding procedures set to begin in July of this year. Themoney for this project will come from the state budget, the MDRTbudget and from other sources. At present, the biggest hall inRomania that can host sporting events and concerts is Bucharest'sSala Polivalentă in Tineretului Park. The hall can seat 6,000 to8,000 people.

At the beginning of this year Tourism Minister Elena Udrealaunched the "Multipurpose Halls" National Programme, whereby 30multipurpose halls are set to be built in county towns, which willseat 5,000, 10,000 and 15,000 respectively.
