National electricity carrier Transelectrica is interested to build a new line to link it to Serbia, between Timisoara and Vrsac. The project requires more than 100 million euros in investments.
"Building the section that falls upon Transelectrica entails more than 100 million euros in funds, as the Portile de Fier-Resita-Timisoara-Arad lines will have to be converted from 220kV to 400kV. This is why the investment will exceed 100 million euros for the Romanian party, with the funding secured from loans," Ion Merfu, Transelectrica''s general manager told Ziarul Financiar.
The Serbian party should make significant investments, as well, Merfu says.
The new line will contribute to sustaining transactions on the electricity market in SE Europe, as well as to boost transport capacity between Romania''s and Serbia and Montenegro''s systems.
The representatives of Transelectrica, the operator of the national electricity transport system and those of the Serbia and Montenegro''s electricity carrier, Elektromreza Srbje, met in Bucharest on Wednesday to discuss the project.
A memorandum of understanding will be drafted at first, which will set the next steps to be taken, such as securing consents and devising the feasibility study.
Transelectrica is currently carrying out investment projects of about 600 million euros, most of which aimed at achieving compliance with the Union for the Coordination of Transmission of Electricity (UCTE) standards, an organisation it joined in 2003.
The investments are directed towards upgrades of the company''s transport infrastructure.
