Ulker to invest $20m in biscuit production

20.10.2004, 00:00 11

Ulker, Turkey's largest food producer, has decided to stop importing biscuits to Romania from Turkey and begin production in Romania instead. This decision comes in view of the potential for growth of the Romanian market and the country's upcoming EU accession.

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) is to grant a $9m loan to Ulker, which will use the money to expand on the Romanian market, investing in production facilities for biscuits, chocolate and margarine.

Ulker has already started building its new production centres in Romania, with its Bucharest-based plant (Eurex Alimentare) already 80% complete.

They will buy their raw materials directly from the local producers and also use Romanian distributors.

The project will have a positive impact on the development and modernisation of distribution networks and will also increase the number of the company's distribution partners.

Other important players on the market are also planning to invest in new biscuit production facilities. Besides Ulker, the producer of the Supreme chocolate brand will soon begin construction of a biscuit plant, and Dobrogea Group, one of the main players in the milling and bread market, is to spend four million euros on a biscuit production line. Bacau-based Pambac, another big player in the industry, also plans to invest in biscuit production, which it will do in an investment of four million euros over the next few years.
