Ursus: Second quarter was worse than the first

20.07.2009, 16:32 9

Ursus Breweries, producer of Ursus and Timisoreana, a company with over 300 million euros in turnover, posted lower than estimated sales in the first half of this year, according to company officials. "The market is shrinking, and this also has an impact on our sales, with our first-half sales below estimates. In addition to the fact that there were many rainy days, Romanians working abroad sent in less money, while those coming to Romania spend less than in previous years," explained Stephan Maria Weber, president of Ursus Breweries.

However, Weber says the company fares better than the market, which has seen its first two-digit decline in ten years, according to ZF data. "The second quarter of this year was much weaker than the first in terms of sales and June was not a good month, either," said the president of the beer producer.

Ursus Breweries has been one of the fastest growing beer producers in the industry over the last few years. The Romanian branch of the SABMIller Group ended the April 2008 – March 2009 fiscal year with an 18% sales volume rise, to almost 5.9 million hectolitres, and with a 27% rise in RON-sales. In 2008 the beer market grew by just 4%.
