Tea Ceremony in Bucharest

12.06.2000, 00:00 Autor: Aristita Albacan

Asian civilisation in general and especially the Japanese one, has made its rituals - numerous, extremely refined and eccentric for the ordinary European eye - a subtle weapon for conquering the other continents and, at the same time, a support for its own continuity. One of the best known and appreciated rituals is the complex and extremely elaborated tea ceremony, which is certainly an unforgettable experience for anyone. Especially when it is held by a great master.

The hereditary successor of Great Master Soshitsu SEN of the fifteenth generation of Urasenke tradition, whose genealogy starts over 400 years ago, Sishi Sen, born in 1956, officiated ceremonies throughout the world in honour of great personalities and high officials. As president of Urasenke Foundation, Soshi Sen continues the tea ceremony tradition, following the initial work of his parent and being at the same time a professor at several universities in Japan and China, as well as an esteemed writer. One of the most important tea ceremony schools from Japan, URASENKE numbers over 20 million practitioners worldwide, having numerous offices and study groups in many countries around the world, including Romania.

First presented to the Romanian public in 1996, courtesy of Nipponica Foundation, the tea ceremony enjoyed a great success, which led to the foundation of Chanaoyu - Nipponica Company, recognised by Urasenke and which enables numerous Romanians to take specialised classes.

Those interested in finding out more about the subject and who are willing to dedicate one hour of their spare time to attend an ancient ceremony, extraordinary for the European sensitivity, are welcome at the conference followed by the ceremony, held by Great Master Soshi Sen, today at 10:30 in Amfiteatru Hall of the Bucharest National Theatre. A tea served ritualistically and ceremoniously, an opportunity for introspection and interior healing is a welcome and necessary counterpoint against the electoral agitation and the heat that has conquered the capital lately.
