In mid-July, in the middle of the summer season, there are still no exact figures regarding the number of tourists who spent their holiday at the Romanian seaside, with the only data that can present an image of the start of the season being a statistical presentation on the number of nights spent on the seaside.
Since early June until almost mid-July, the Romanian seaside totalled almost 1.4-1.5 million nights of accommodation in hotels and boarding houses.
On the basis of these data, provided by the Association for the Promotion and Development of Seaside Travel and Constanta Police Inspectorate, the value of revenues on the seaside can be put at 30-32m euros, taking into account an average price of 21 euros per night of accommodation, according to ZF calculations. "(...) Data regarding nights spent on the seaside are practically a first in our country starting this year, which doesn't allow us to make comparisons with last year," stated Traian Badulescu, spokesman with the National Association of Travel Agencies (ANAT).
Statistical data about seaside travel were contradictory even last year, depending on the source of information.
Over 80% of holidays on the Romanian seaside are sold by travel agencies, which in the first six months posted 20% lower sales.
Ciprian Constantinescu, president of the Association of Hotel Owners in the South Seaside, stated tourists chose 1 and 2-star hotels and not 3 and 4-star ones. He also specified accommodation tariffs were as much as 20% smaller than last year in some cases.
Holidays sold by travel agencies are on average made up of six nights. But, there are also weekend tourists. Market players cannot provide data on the percentage of tourists opting for three-night holidays or for longer holidays, which leads to the impossibility of determining the number of seaside tourists.
What's certain is that the number of tourists through travel agencies is falling. Romanians are still the biggest "consumers" of Romanian seaside.
