Eurocheese puts 4m euros in cheese plant

12.12.2005, 19:43 14

Bucharest-based Eurocheese Production and Distribution, a company operating in the dairy industry, has said it will invest 4 million euros next year in the construction of a cheese plant in Jilava.

The company''s representatives said that half of the investment would be secured from the company''s own resources, with the rest being covered through SAPARD financing.

"We have a production centre that no longer meets market demands, and therefore we''ve decided to invest in a new plant, to double our production capacity," said Victoria Tura, general manager of the company.

The main customers of the company are large key-accounts networks, such as Carrefour, Cora and Rewe, which have expanded their store networks over the last year and also boosted demand for Eurocheese products.

The company purchased a 10,000 square metre land plot in Jilava, and the plant will have a 3,000 square metres area. The current production centre is located in Bucharest, on the Unirea industrial platform.

"The land allows us to expand. In the first phase, the plant will process 40,000 litres of milk daily, and the production capacity will amount to 6-7 tonnes of cheese," Tura also said.

The construction works will begin next spring, and the project implementation will take 9 months.

"The plant will be automated and we will not hire more than 30 persons," Tura also said.

So far, the company''s investments have been mainly targeted at the acquisition of packaging and processing machinery. The total value of investments made over the last five years amounts to 1.5 million dollars (1.2 million euros).

For this year, the company forecasts turnover standing at 1.3 million euros, but for next year the company''s officials expect almost 40% growth. "We''ve signed contracts with our major customers and set certain targets with each of them. Based on these figures, we expect turnover to reach 1.8 million euros," Tura also said.

The company makes fresh cheese, pressed cheese and salted cheese, under its own brands - Traian One, VIP and Teo, as well as under a private label system for key-accounts networks.

Eurocheese is a privately held company, and its main shareholders are Eurocheese Distribution company and Uniprep. dana.ciriperu@zf.ro
