Giulesti maternity hospital tragedy brings out lack of discipline in hospitals and of construction standards

19.08.2010, 23:54 8

In Romania, hospitals or other public interest buildings areerected in the absence of any standards or guidelines as theEuropean legislation in the field is now being implemented.

In the private sector, those who build hospitals hire Europeanconsultants "because if the implementation of some rules isdecided, Romanian authorities are usually more catholic thanCatholics," according to businesspeople.

Whilst there are some rules about air filtration, furniture orpaint, the moving of dirty laundry, those who build hospitals donot have any information on the area the buildings should belocated in, the number of parking places, number of ambulances, oron what a hospital located at the outskirts should do compared witha downtown one.

The recent incident of Panait Sarbu hospital (Giulesti maternityhospital) brings out, besides an extremely poorly developedhospital infrastructure, the lack of organisation and discipline inRomanian hospitals, visible right from their gates.
