Lilly's top man leaves to start his own business

05.09.2007, 18:08 19

Marius Savu, the general manager of the domestic unit of US drug maker Eli Lilly, intends to relinquish his position at the company and start his own business. At the moment, Savu is considering going into pharmaceutical consulting services and the private medical sector.
"I want to invest in a private medical centre, but I have made no definite steps in this direction. The private medical system is set to witness a sustained growth in the coming period, which will largely depend on legislation," said Savu.
He also specified he would keep in contact with the pharmaceuticals industry, as he is interested in developing a consultancy business in this field.
As yet, Eli Lilly has not appointed a successor to Savu, who was selected to head Eli Lilly Romania in 1992.
Savu's departure comes as several other major players on the Romanian market have announced top management changes over the past few years.
Last year, Regis Lhomme left Pfizer Romania, while at the start of this year representatives of GlaxoSmithKline announced that David Lechleiter would replace Roberto Musneci as the company's general manager.
American-based Eli Lilly is one of the world's biggest drug producers. The company's portfolio includes original products and has a policy in place that encourages the development of innovative drugs. The pharmaceutical products that are produced and available on the Romanian market are used to treat diabetes, osteoporosis and cancer, as well as attention deficit disorder. Eli Lilly also produces Cialis, a drug used to treat erectile dysfunction. Its rivals in this medical field are Viagra and Levitra, which are manufactured by US-based Pfizer and GlaxoSmithKline respectively.
In the second quarter of this year Eli Lilly registered domestic sales worth more than 8 million euros, according to the data provided by Cegedim market research company, which ranked it twelfth among the players on the pharmaceutical market.
Last year, US drug producer Eli Lilly registered sales worth 121.2 million RON (34.4 million euros), a 13 percent increase on 2005.
