Oracle set to hire 500 people within a year

Oracle Romania, the domestic arm of the world's biggest business software company, is set to hire approximately 500 people within a year for its Bucharest-based services and support centres.
The move announced by Oracle adds to pressures on the Bucharest labour market, which is the most affected by personnel shortages, and is also expected to further disrupt the ratio between supply and demand on the segment of employers in the services industry. The large level of recruitment on relatively short terms (1-2 years) announced by major multinationals has a direct impact on small businesses in the services and IT segments resulting in the loss of employees, who are lured by higher salaries and the possibility of working for a multinational.
Entry-level salaries for employees with various technical skills or speaking foreign languages start from 300 euros and can go as high as 1,000 euros.
Oracle now has more than 1,000 employees. "Last year, we saw a growth rate of 100%. Practically, the number of employees doubled from 500 to 1,000 and this year we expect a growth rate of 50%. Our plan is to exceed the 1,500 mark by the end of the next financial year, in May 2008," stated Simina Berceanu, HR senior manager at Oracle Romania.
The pressure on the workforce market caused by the wave of recruitment announced by services providers is mounting, as specialists in certain domains (IT, financial), speakers of foreign languages, are among the most sought-after by employers.
"In terms of employment profiles, we compete with other companies, such as HP, IBM and Genpact. However, in terms of recruitment, there is no direct competition, as we are not engaged in head hunting in order to recruit employees from other companies on the market. Our main source of recruitment is the company's website," specified Berceanu.
Services and support centres are among the most active employers in Bucharest and have announced hundreds and even thousands of jobs this year.
In terms of salaries, the manager of Oracle says the level is above the market average and is comparable with other European countries.
From the company's current 1,000 employees, around 900 are employed at the Global Operations and Services Centre in Bucharest, which includes 12 mini-centres with between 30 and 250 employees. These carry activities such as software development, contract renewal, support for customers using Oracle services, etc. The company is due to open its thirteenth mini-centre providing telecommunications consulting services soon and is set to employ around 40 people.
Around 80% of the employees working in the operations and services centre are aged between 25 and 30. Oracle's turnover in Romania doubled in 2005 to 20m euros, while income increased 3 times to 4m euros.
