Wind farms pros and cons

17.06.2010, 20:00 8

The high number of wind energy projects expected to becomeoperational in the following years is raising several questionsabout the safety of the national energy system, dividing marketexperts into two camps: some of them believe the operations ofCernavoda reactors or thermoelectric power stations are likely tobe threatened, while others say these projects will not cause anyproblems up to a certain limit of installed capacity. Stipulationsof Law 220/2008 say that irrespective of national energyconsumption at a certain moment, renewable energy will be the firstto be loaded in the system, which may lead to the halt of someconventional facilities at the moment of inappropriate energyconsumption. Moreover, experts say investors in wind farms haveonly incentives, but no obligation with regard to preserving energysystem security. Experts say, though, that concerns related to thethreat to Cernavoda reactors are unfounded as, despite applicationsfor projects of above 20,000 MW, just the 3,000 MW practicallymeaning the system limit, will materialise at best.
