Liberals break the deal with Nastase

13.04.2001, 00:00 5

The first budget drawn by Adrian Nastase-led Government cost PDSR the loss of the Liberals' political support and the draft's contestation at the Constitutional Court, which is a premiere in the post-December politics. In spite of PNL and PD opposition, the budget Law was yesterday endorsed by Parliament, but it will come into effect after Court magistrates rule on the Law.

Amid the parliamentary polemics, which peaked when several amendments to the budget were proposed, the Liberals yesterday announced that they would cancel the protocol with PDSR, signed before Nastase-led government came to office. "The protocol signed by PNL and PDSR is out of date.

That is why the Liberal parliamentary groups will propose to the Delegation of National Representatives scheduled for May to cancel this protocol," Valeriu Stoica stated in Parliament.

The Liberals' decision, announced a few minutes before the budget draft had to be given the final vote, surprised PDSR ministers and MPs and especially the Prime Minister.

"I am glad you have proposed that this protocol should be cancelled, as I have to admit we could hardly support it against my colleagues and the electorate," Nastase said. Three months after this agreement, the Premier admitted that the protocol could not be a basis for any achievements. His argument was that PNL was quick to deny this agreement, once the party gained some image.

"We are now able to get out of the duplicity of the relationship with PNL, which meant an attempt to exclusively promote PNL proposals, while this party was undermining us and is voting against our Parliamentary initiatives," said the Prime Minister, also PDSR President.

PNL leaders' complaints and the intention to withdraw from the bilateral agreement were known, though they were never made public. Moreover, the Liberals had previously stated they would not announce their intention to cancel the agreement until the party's reunion in May.

The decision came sooner, as PDSR has led the budget discussions in a "dictatorial" manner, showing no flexibility towards PNL amendments.
