Cegedim: Romanian drug market reaches 7.1bn RON in 2008

The Romanian pharmaceutical market reached 7.16 billion RON last year, a 17.7% increase against 2007, when the industry rose by 11.2%, to 6.08 billion RON. In the company ranking, Roche and Sanofi outranked GSK, which was No.1 in 2007, according to Cegedim research company. In euros, the growth rate of the pharmaceutical market declined to 6.6% last year against 2007, when sales rose by around 17.3%, to 1.8 billion euros. According to Cegedim data, the retail market saw a 19.7% rise last year, to 6.19 billion RON (1.68 billion euros), i.e. 86.4% of the total value of sales. As for the hospital market, it rose by 6.5%, to 971.3 million RON (263.5 million euros) in 2008. In 2007, the hospital market recorded a 19.7% decline, to 911.6 million RON, due to national health programmes being transferred from hospitals to drugstores. Prescription drugs amounted to 5 billion RON (1.35 billion euros), up 21.5%, while OTC drug sales rose 12.6%, to 1.18 billion RON (322.7 million euros).
