It's naive to think one can survive in retail today without offers and promotions

Consumer goods, from bread and milk to personal care items, havebeen the least hurt during recent years, while alcoholic beverageshave been the first to go from shopping baskets lately, with almosthave of buyers stating in a survey carried out by Nielsen marketresearch company that they gave up these products because of thecrisis.

"Romanians do not restrain themselves much when spending to filltheir tables," says Bogdana Baltasiu, a client service manager, thecustomer research unit of Nielsen. This is happening as many havenow given up spending in bars, restaurants, coffee shops oropen-air terraces and most are spending their time with friends intheir own home," reads BUSINESS Magazin.

As purchasing power continued to fall, promotions played an evenmore important role last year. Promotions are the ace up one'ssleeve, say many producers.

Marius Meleşteu, general manager of Strauss Romania, believes"it is naive for someone to imagine that you can survive in retailtoday without offers and promotions".
