Fearing a rise in the number of bank robberies, as well asbecause of cash-related costs, banks require of their clients tolet them know at least one day in advance if they wish to withdrawa significant amount of cash, even from 3,000 euros upwards. Thisalso applies when withdrawing a deposit on the day itmatures.
Big banks, whose cash management system works well, require priornotification only when it comes to amounts above 10,000 euros orthe RON equivalent. In some cases, when large amounts are involved, banks can go as far as to require that a written application besubmitted two days in advance, with clients being forced to go tothe branch twice to collect their own money.
If they go to a big branch, clients can receive the money on theday of their choice and without giving advance warning, but theyare required to pay a commission of up to 1% of the amountwithdrawn. The cases where clients have to let the bank knowbeforehand are, however, not very frequent, considering the averagedeposit held by an individual does not exceed 6,000 RON, accordingto data from the Banking Deposits Guarantee Fund for 2009. Read anin-depth analysis on the subject in tomorrow's issue.
