The former chairman of PNL (National Liberal Party), Valeriu Stoica, has made a comeback on the political scene with the launch of a personal project involving the merger of PNL and PD (Democratic Party), which are at present joining forces within the electoral alliance D.A. PNL-PD. Stoica also supports the positioning of the new structure as a people's centre-rightist party.
The idea has been firmly rejected by the leaders of the two political parties, Traian Basescu and Theodor Stolojan. The alliance now has other priorities - it must focus on drafting the governing project, on the electoral campaign and does not need any other new experiments, say the Alliance leaders.
All in all, Valeriu Stoica proposes, as a personal project, which was however launched in the wake of talks with Stolojan and Basescu, the unification of the two parties. This would have to be performed in two stages. Firstly, a political unification, before elections. This way, data already agreed upon in the alliance protocol, such as the representation of each party on joint electoral lists, would not be modified. The only change would be that the Alliance would participate in the elections as a party, and not as an alliance.
After the elections, whether they are won by the Alliance or not, the unification process would continue. This might last for several years.
The new party would be neither Social-Democratic, nor Liberal. According to the scenario, the Democrats would withdraw from the Socialist International, would break with the European Socialists' Party, whereas the Liberals would have to leave the Liberal International and the Liberal group of the European Parliament (when Romania joins the European Union). The new faction would become a member of the European People's Party (PPE), the most powerful group in the European Parliament.
