Aectra to dust Ukrainian and Moldovan crops

12.01.2004, 00:00 11

The Aectra Group, best known for its pesticide production and trade in synthetic fibres and plastic, will open two branches in Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova this year, following a similar investment in Bulgaria in 2002. The group is also contemplating expansion to Serbia. The Romanian companies are part of the international Aectra Group based in Lausanne and held by several individuals. The group's turnover worldwide amounts to approximately $600 million. One of the main fields in which Aectra operates in Romania is pesticides, a market that has been constantly dwindling over the last few years. Pesticides accounted for nearly half of the group's turnover last year, $28 million. General manager Dan Popescu says he does not expect this year to come with high sales for the new branches, considering the products (the pesticides primarily) to be sold in these countries would need to be authorised first. The Bulgarian branch of the company is operating as a dealer for the plastic and textile divisions only. The Romanian pesticide market has been clearly going down in the last few years. ZF
